The Unofficial Macon Home Page

UPDATED 5-25-99 The U.S. Government now has a new search engine that is supposed to be very powerful. I have not used it but you are supposed to be able to retrieve many government documents from this site. Go to the Links page to link to this site.

UPDATED 5-24-99 I know there are many genealogy fans here in the Macon area so here is a sight for you! This is supposed to be the top genealogy site on the internet. I warn you that it is very busy and you may have a hard time getting in. Go to the Links page to get there.

UPDATED 5-1-99 I have recieved many kind words from people stating that they will miss this page so I have decided to continue it. I try and keep it updated with new things from time to time to keep the readers interest up but it is sometimes hard to do. I thought that the Unofficial Macon Picture of the Day would do the trick. That has turned out to be more work that I thought. I am going to try and recuit a couple of helpers so that could be the answer. Even at that the Unofficial Macon Picture of the Day may be more like the Unofficial Macon Picture of the WEEK!

Please discount the words that have appeared here the last few days about the page closing down. We will see how it goes. Thanks again for all of you generous remarks.!

UPDATED5-5-99 There is a letter going around Macon that concerns Veterans. Generally speaking, it says that a Veteran can get a dividend (read money) if they apply to this certain address. My information is that this is a hoax. Before you send anything I would suggest that you contact Rich Davis, Veteran Service Officer at 385-3191, he can fill you in on all of the details.

UPDATED 5-3-99 Well here it is, the Unofficial Macon Picture of the Day. I don't know how this thing is going to go. This camera has more gadgets on it than a Swiss Army knife. I am a long way from having it figured out.

Neither journalism nor photograpy ever did a whole lot for me so expect the pictures to be of poor quality and the subject material to be badly chosen.

I will probably cheat on this! If the weather is good or I am just in the mood, I will possibly take several pictures and then try to pass them off to you as being taken that day! Click here for the Unofficial Macon Picture of the Day.

I wanted to make you aware of a free service. It is called eFax. This service would be appropriate for anyone who does not have a stand alone fax machine. Most of us don't. This would be beneficial for anyone who doesn't have or know how to use their fax software program, or people that don't want to leave their computer or fax software running just to receive an occasional fax.

It works like this. You sign up for the service and you are issued your own fax number. The person or business wanting to send you a fax then dials your fax number and sends the fax. The fax actually goes to eFax's server. From there it is sent to you via your regular email. eFax will provide you with a viewer that will enable you to view, print, edit, etc. your fax. The best part is that it is FREE! How can this be free you ask. It is done through advertising. When you recieve your fax there will be some advertisments sent with it. It DOES cost the person that sends the fax however. The fax number that you are issued uses a 707 area code and as such would be a toll call. California??

By now you are probably clamoring, how do I sign up for this wonderous service!! Simply click on the eFax link and it will take you to the eFax home page. eFax

Don't have enough email accounts for your family? Or would you just like to use web-based email? I heard a little rumor yesterday that IST is working on a project to make web-based email available. The neat thing about this is that you will be able to view your email from any computer that has internet service. Watch the IST Home Page for an official announcement about this service.

****UPDATED 03-21-99 This is not a commercial for Mercantile Bank, but they are now offering a service that I really like. It is called Online Banking. I know this is not a new concept, but I do not think that it has ever been offered at a local bank before. The good part about it is that the basic service is free, as far as I can tell! I find it to be very convenient to be able to access my account information 24 hrs. a day. How fast they process paid checks and ATM transactions to your account remains to be seen.

Signing up for the service was fairly straightforward. Just go to the Mercantile Bank link above. Downloading the 128 bit encryption to make my browser secure was something of a challenge, but "Pat" at Mercantile (385-6481) can help you if you have any trouble. A bonus for all of you Quicken and Microsoft Money users is that it appears that you will be able to download your statement right into your program, saving you much typing. I ***THINK***that it works like that. I have not really checked it out.****UPDATE**** I checked into the download feature and here is what the Online Banking help file had to say.

"How to download into Quicken
If you use Quicken personal financial software, you can download transactions from Online Banking to your PC. You can then import the transactions from the file on your PC into the appropriate Quicken account, eliminating the need to type these transactions into Quicken manually. "

This last paragraph was taken directly from the help file. It should be accurate.

I am not a Mercantile employee or stockholder, but I think that all of this is a great service!! And FREE too!!!!

****UPDATED 03-12-99 I have had a few comments that this main page was somwhat cluttered and unorganized. Well, I agree. I don't know that I have solved the organization problem, but I have moved several things to a "Links" page.

This is the new Internet Explorer 5.0 Beta. Read all of the cautions before you download this one!

If your operating system is Windows 95, click here

If your operating system is Windows 3.1, click here

I don't *think* that the Windows Media Player will work with Windows 3.1 as an operating system. I think that it takes Windows 95,98 or NT. I do *think* that Real Player will work with Windows 3.1.

There is considerable talk about an ethanol plant coming to the Macon area. Very few people in this area have ever seen an ethanol plant. Click here to see one.

I have moved several things to a page called Links. This main page was just getting too cluttered.
